Artist Bio
Jacob Phillips is an interdisciplinary artist whose creative journey transports viewers into an imaginary Southern landscape, providing a unique perspective shaped by the experiences of a gay man. His artistic vision is deeply influenced by elements of queer culture and camp aesthetics, contributing to the distinctive character of his work.
Phillips earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from the University of North Texas in 2021. Prior to that, he obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2017.
Currently, Jacob holds the position of Sculpture Visual Arts Technician and Adjunct Professor at the University of North Texas. This dual role speaks to his commitment to both the practical aspects of the visual arts and the education of emerging artists.
Beyond his academic roles, Jacob Phillips is actively involved in the broader artistic community. He serves on two National Boards of Directors, namely the SSMC-Student Shop Managers Consortium (2022-2024) and the Mid-South Sculpture Alliance (2023-2026). These roles highlight his dedication to shaping and contributing to the discourse within the fields of safety and sculpture on a national level.
Phillips' work has been showcased in various galleries and museums, showcasing his artistic prowess and thematic exploration. Notable venues include the Metal Museum in Memphis, The Hall Gallery in Jackson, Vox Gallery in Birmingham, Cora Stafford Gallery at the University of North Texas in Denton, and many others across different cities.
His exhibitions span a diverse range of locations, from the Dallas World Trade Center in Dallas to the Wiregrass Museum of Art in Dothan, Alabama. Phillips emerges as a talented and engaged artist, educator, and advocate, using his artistic voice to navigate and contribute to the cultural and social landscapes he draws inspiration from.
